Here's some advice from my experience at forming a guild:
1. Find people interested in starting up a guild. 2. Find people who are really interested, not ones who want to jump on the bandwagon 3. Of those people who are interested, find some dedicated ones and people who will help share the responsibilities and duties 4. Keep the inital group small. 5-10 people are more than enough to establish ground rules, guild ideals, a webpages, a mission statement, etc. 5. In the intial group of people, try to find people with a variety of talents. For example you'll want someone who's excellent at webpage design, someone who's a natural leader, etc 6. Once you have the base of your guild formed, decide how you want to expand. While open recruitment may be fun, you'll get a lot of dead weight and people who really aren't interested. A sponsorship program is usually a good way to go. Inviting friends and family of current guild members will usually provide more activity as they are playing with people they already know. Other tips: - Find ways to make your members active. This is a big problem as the game isn't out yet. Things like web forums, IRC, Teamspeak and even playing other games together will go a long way in getting to know each other. - Don't be afraid to get rid of troublesome people. If there's a conflict in the guild then make sure to settle it. While booting people isn't a fun thing to do, sometimes it has to be done, but only in extreme cases - Make sure everyone is on the same page. If half the guild wants to be a PvE guild, while the other half wants to be a hardcore PvP guild, then you'll have to find a way to work this out. - Have fun.
